For some people, the idea of spending any amount of time alone sounds awful, while for others, it sounds like a dream come true. Whether you treasure your time spent by yourself or dread it, there are several reasons why it’s a good idea. Even if you love being around people and can’t stand being alone, it’s important to take some time away from your friends, family, coworkers, and classmates to be alone and do things on your own.
- You can be a little selfish. I know, I know. “Selfishness is bad!” Of course selfishness in general isn’t a good thing (it’s important to be considerate of others and their needs), but being able to prioritize yourself isn’t necessarily bad every once in a while either. When you choose to spend time alone, you’re in complete control of what you do and where you go.
Always wanted to check out that new bookstore but couldn’t find a friend willing to make the trip? If you’re by yourself, you don’t have to agree on plans with anyone else.
- You can step outside your comfort zone. Of course you can try new things and be a little daring when you’re with friends or family, but there’s something about being by yourself that makes it an even bigger challenge.
Whether it’s flying solo on that vacation you’ve been dreaming of or just going to dinner on your own, you can get a massive boost in confidence when you realize that you don’t need the presence of others to feel comfortable doing these things!
- You’ll get comfortable going places alone. While it can be more comfortable to try a new restaurant or go to a new class with a friend, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going on your own! It might feel like people are watching you, but when’s the last time you judged someone for showing up somewhere alone?
The more places you go by yourself, the more comfortable you’ll get!
Remember, none of this is to say that you should never hang out with your friends or family. But it does mean that you probably don’t need to fret if someone cancels on you at the last minute. Did you have plans to go to an exercise class or visit a local museum with a friend but they backed out? No worries! Do you have a new shop you want to visit or a new restaurant you want to try, but can’t find anyone to go with you? It’s okay to go alone! Even for the most extroverted people, alone time can have some serious benefits!
