Post-Miscarriage Care

It can take a few weeks to a month to recover physically from a miscarriage.

  • Talk to your doctor before trying to get pregnant again to be informed or have any medical testing done.
  • Depending on when the miscarriage occurred, the pregnancy hormones can remain in your blood for 1 to 2 months after you miscarry.
  • Most women get their period again 4 to 6 weeks after a miscarriage.
  • You can ovulate as soon as two weeks after a miscarriage so it is possible to not have a period and become pregnant.
  • Most women who miscarry go on to have healthy pregnancies and healthy children later

It may take much longer to recover emotionally from the loss due to miscarriage.

  • You may have feelings of grief about the death of your baby – sadness, anger, confusion, loneliness – these are all normal and you are not alone.
  • It is okay to take time to grieve and, in fact, it is healthier for you long-term mentally, emotionally and spiritually to allow yourself to grieve rather than pretending all is well.
  • Find a family member, friend, faith community or counselor to help you through this time.
  • Tell your health provider if you feel that you need help dealing with your grief.
  • Although your body may be physically ready to become pregnant again, you may not be emotionally ready to try again so soon. This is okay. It’s okay to want to wait to try to get pregnant again. Give yourself time; you will know when you are ready.
