Deciding to parent your baby is a beautiful and overwhelming choice. If your pregnancy is unexpected, these emotions are often magnified. Despite what you may have heard from the media, popular culture, and elsewhere, it is possible to parent your baby with the support and resources you need. It’s a big and exciting decision and we are so excited for you. If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and would like to parent, here are some questions to consider beforehand.
SUPPORT
Raising a child requires support, at least in some form. If you are considering parenting your baby, thinking about your possible support network is helpful. Do you have family or friends nearby? What about the baby’s father? Would they be supportive? Some women rely on parents or close friends for childcare if they need, plan or want to work. If none of these options are available to you and you still want to parent, don’t worry! There are programs and resources that can help you, like childcare vouchers. Book a consult with Clearway Clinic and we can point you in the right direction.
FINANCES
Speaking of finances, do you have an idea of where you stand? Finances are stressful for everyone, but when you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, they can seem even more overwhelming. However, despite cultural expectations, you don’t need to have lots of money to parent your children. A budget can help you understand how much you spend on a regular basis and make space for other expenses, like childcare. You can also look into creative ways to earn more income before your baby arrives, like DoorDash, Shipt, or Instacart. Don’t let financial struggles get in the way of your desire to parent, because there are options for you if needed.
LIVING SPACE
Similar to your support network, do you have a safe space to live? This is important regardless of whether you parent or not, but especially so if you have a baby. A few things to consider when it comes to housing are space for a mini crib or Pack n’ Play (you don’t need a big crib for several months!), ability to childproof, and safety with any housemates or other adults. Since your baby needs a safe space to live and sleep, housing is very important.
CIRCUMSTANCES
Although it can seem overwhelming now, remember that circumstances can change quickly. Relationships, finances, and living situations can be different six months from now. This is why it’s helpful to consider these factors when deciding to parent.
