Have you recently had a positive pregnancy test? It’s scary and overwhelming, especially when a pregnancy is unexpected or unplanned. Especially in the immediate moments after seeing a positive test, you probably feel scared and unsure. So, what can you do after you see that positive result — even if you’re not sure you’re ready to parent?
DON’T PANIC
Even if you feel like it, try not to panic. When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, it’s completely understandable to be concerned about the future and your readiness to parent. But it’s easy to forget that the emotions and experiences in one moment may not always reflect the support and options available to you. Take it one day at a time. Try not to make any life-changing decisions without the support of a trusted counselor, friend, or family member. Although you may feel overwhelmed, there are people to help and support you during this time!
LOOK INTO OPTIONS
You might feel that abortion is your only option if you don’t want to or are not ready to parent, but there are other alternatives. Look into all of the options for you before deciding to end your pregnancy. Worried about finances or relationship struggles? There are support systems in place, both locally and on the state level, that could be helpful for you. Research adoption, both closed, open, or even embryo options. Consider the systems and support you might have if you were to parent. If you have questions or want to learn more, give us a call! We’d love to give you some resources.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DOCTOR
Finally, even if you think you want to have an abortion, call your doctor to schedule an appointment. There are several reasons to do this. First, your doctor will confirm your pregnancy with a test or even an ultrasound. About 10-15% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. This means that an abortion would not even be necessary. Another reason is to find out how far along in pregnancy you are. The results can affect the type of abortion you would be able to get, which can be a determining factor for some women.
