How Do I Tell My Partner That I Am Pregnant?

So your period was late, your pregnancy test is verified, and now with all those big emotions you are processing, you also need to tell your partner. That’s a lot to handle, and it’s an important conversation regardless of whether or not you planned the pregnancy. And it leaves you wondering, how do I tell my partner that I am pregnant? So before you start to plan your discussion, here are some helpful tips to open the lines of communication and have a healthy conversation about your pregnancy.

Verify Your Pregnancy

Before you pick up the phone and call your partner, make sure your pregnancy has been verified. While there are many signs of early pregnancy, going to a clinic and having an ultrasound or test will help confirm the pregnancy. This can also tell you how far along you are.

Plan To Speak In Person

This is really big news, so you might be tempted to call your partner right away, but it’s best to have this conversation in real life. That way, you can see their reaction, plan your next steps, and be more emotionally prepared.  Try to schedule a time when you can both be uninterrupted so you can hug, cry, laugh, or whatever other emotions you two have.

Pick The Right Environment

Having a quiet and comfortable place to talk is essential. You both want to feel safe to show your emotions, so try to keep this in mind. Maybe you plan your conversation at home, at a park, or any other location that will allow you to talk uninterrupted.

Know Your Options

Are you planning to parent, considering adoption, or legal guardianship? It’s essential to know your options and have some idea about what you want to do about your pregnancy. Of course, your partner should be part of this conversation, but it’s always good to be prepared with some answers. If you would like to learn more about your options, our staff is always here to walk you through everything and offer resources to help you and your partner make the right decision for your child.

Be Understanding

An unexpected pregnancy can be overwhelming at first, so give them time to process their emotions. They may not know how to react at first, so try to keep that in mind when you share the news.

Pregnancy is a life-changing event, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Whether you need to verify your pregnancy or receive pregnancy care, we are always here to support you.
