Pregnancy and Exercise

Pregnancy and Exercise
Many people think that as soon as they get pregnant they need to stop all physical activity and be careful in case something may happen to the baby. Although it is important to be very careful when it comes to lifting things – things like boxes, heavy laundry baskets etc – there is no reason to stop all physical activity. In fact, physical exercise is beneficial to your overall health during pregnancy and in most cases is safe.
The basic guideline is that whatever you did for regular exercise before you became pregnant is safe to continue. If anything becomes uncomfortable or painful then you should stop and consult with your doctor. In addition, if you want to start a new exercise routine or method you should consult with your doctor first.
It is important to remember that during pregnancy weight gain is normal and necessary, so exercise during pregnancy should never be for weight loss.
If you have not been actively involved in an exercise routine prior to pregnant but would like to begin start with something simple like walking. Talk with your doctor about options for increasing exercise programs.
