Signs and Symptoms: Anxiety and Depression

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: Anxiety & Depression

Life has its ups and downs for everyone, and as a result we can quickly swing between the positive and negative feelings associated with life events. Feeling sad or anxious is normal for everyone, but sometimes when difficult situations become long-term or extremely stressful, our mental and emotional state can lapse into more serious levels of anxiety and depression. Unplanned pregnancy, dealing with a difficult relationship, difficult family situations, pressure for decision making, regret over past decisions, or loss due to miscarriage or abortion may be causes for chronic depression or anxiety.
How do you know it it’s “normal” or if it’s a greater concern? Below are some of the signs and symptoms for you to be aware of.

DEPRESSION

  • Persistent feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, worthlessness or helplessness
  • Decreased energy, fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
  • Appetite changes and/or weight changes
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies
  • Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment – headaches, digestive disorders
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

ANXIETY

  • Muscle tension, racing heart
  • Teeth grinding
  • Difficulties sleeping or feeling fatigued
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Inability to control worry or fear
  • Panic

If you observe several of these in yourself or a loved one, please don’t hesitate to reach out for a medical professional for an evaluation.
