The Adoption Option: It’s Not What It Used To Be

The Adoption Option: It’s not what it used to be
Before you assume this option is a closed door, you need to know that adoption and its stigma has changed significantly in recent decades.   For many women who have had a previous abortion, they state that they could never have another abortion (for many reasons) but find themselves pregnant again and are still unable to ensure a good environment to parent the child.  The feelings of being trapped into a termination option are all too real as many times, although it goes against their wishes, women choose abortion again simply because they think it’s the only other option. Adoption is actually a very real and courageous option to consider and, as with all options, should be researched to know that it may be the right decision for you.  Any of these decisions (parenting, adoption, abortion) are difficult to make; each come with their own challenges and should never be made hastily.
Here are some quick facts about adoption to consider:

  • Each woman’s life circumstances, health and beliefs are different so what is best for one woman may not be the best for you.
  • As with any life-changing decision it takes time and requires you to be informed about the process and facts of adoption. (See the links below to begin learning for yourself what’s involved).
  • You as the birth mother have complete control over the process and have certain legal rights.
  • You do have the option of choosing the family that will be adopting your baby. Many adoption agencies have online profiles about couples/families waiting to adopt so you can learn all about them.
  • You have the ability to choose and decide along with the family how much or how little you want to be involved in your child’s life (Open adoption, semi-open, closed adoption)
  • You have the right to change your mind at any time up until the papers are signed – which in MA is legally the fourth calendar day after your baby’s birth.

There has been a growing movement to change the perception of adoption in this country and to realize that when a birth mom decides to place their baby for adoption it is in fact one of the bravest and most loving decisions a mother can make.
